Retirement Planning in Aberdeen

You spent decades building savings. We help you turn them into income you can live on, decide when to claim Social Security and pick which accounts to draw from first. Then we keep checking the plan, year after year, so it lasts as long as you do.

Making your savings pay you

Most people come to us after the saving years. They have a 401(k), an IRA, maybe a pension or cash in the bank. The open question is how to turn all of it into a paycheck that holds up for twenty or thirty years without running dry.

A retirement plan writes that answer down. We look at what you own, what you spend and how you want to live, then lay out an income plan that fits. Building it is half the job; keeping it up to date is the rest. Prices climb, markets move, tax law shifts and health can change without warning. A plan nobody touches drifts. We meet on a set schedule and adjust before small gaps get bigger.

You can meet us at our office, or talk by phone or video if that is easier.

What we cover in a retirement plan

  1. 01

Every income source in one view

Social Security, pensions, savings, rent from a property, part-time pay: we list each source you can count on. Then we set it beside what you actually spend each month.

  2. 02

    When to claim Social Security

Claiming can start at 62 or wait until 70, and each year of waiting raises the monthly amount. We work out the figures for you, and for your spouse too if you're married, so the age you pick suits your health, savings and other income.

  3. 03

    Which account to tap first

The order you spend from taxable, tax-deferred and Roth money shapes your tax bill for years. We set that sequence and update it whenever your income shifts.

  4. 04

    Planning for required withdrawals

At a certain age the IRS makes you start taking money out of most retirement accounts. We plan those withdrawals in advance so one big required payout doesn't bump you into a higher bracket without warning.

  5. 05

    Medical and long-term care costs

We cover the stretch before Medicare begins at 65 and the bills Medicare leaves to you. We also talk about what a long illness or a need for care could do to your savings.

  6. 06

    A review every year

Once a year or more, we hold the plan up against what actually happened. Then we adjust spending, withdrawals and investments to keep it on course.

When it's time to sit down about retirement

  • Ten years or less until you stop working

This is the stretch when big choices pile up. Decisions about savings, Roth conversions and when to claim get much harder to reverse later on.

  • You don't know your monthly income

Knowing what's in your accounts is not the same as knowing what you'll get each month once you retire. One phone call to us is the first step toward that answer.

  • Accounts spread across many places

A 401(k) left at each old job, an IRA at one firm, a brokerage account at another. Spread-out accounts are tough to track and easy to lose sight of.

  • You face a pension or buyout choice

Monthly checks or a lump sum. Single life or joint. Many of these picks can't be changed afterward, so look closely before signing anything.

  • You stopped working without a plan

Lots of people retire first and work out the money afterward. You still have time. We begin from your situation today.

How we work together

  1. 1

    Introductory meeting

We talk about where you are, what you want and what's worrying you. No pressure and no paperwork to sign. You'll leave knowing whether we're a good fit.

  2. 2

    Gather the facts

You bring statements, pension details and your Social Security estimate. We look at spending, taxes and any insurance you already carry.

  3. 3

    Build the plan

We lay out an income plan in plain language: where each dollar comes from, when and why. We go through it with you line by line and change what doesn't sit right.

  4. 4

    Put it in motion

We help you set up withdrawals, consolidate accounts if it makes sense and line up your investments with the plan.

  5. 5

    Keep it maintained

We meet at least once a year, and sooner if something big changes. Each review checks the plan against real life and makes small fixes early.

What drives the cost

Retirement planning has no one set price, since every client's situation differs. At your introductory meeting, before any work begins, we explain how we're paid and what that covers, so you know what you pay and why.

Number of accounts and income streams
One IRA plus Social Security is less work than a pension, rental income, a business and several old workplace plans.
How involved your taxes are
Roth conversion planning, big required withdrawals or income earned in more than one state add hours. Every plan we build accounts for New Jersey's state income tax.
Whether we also run your investments
Some clients only want the plan. Others want us managing the portfolio and doing the yearly upkeep. A wider scope changes the cost.
How often we meet
The starting point is one review a year. People in the middle of a major change sometimes ask to meet more often.

Retirement planning questions

How much do I need to retire?

It depends on what you spend, not on a round number from a magazine. We start with your real monthly costs, subtract guaranteed income like Social Security and pensions, and see what your savings need to cover. That gives you a number that belongs to you.

Is it too late to start if I'm already 60?

No. Some of the most important decisions, like when to claim Social Security and how to draw down savings, happen right around now. We work with what you have and make the most of the years ahead.

Should I take my pension as a lump sum?

Sometimes yes, often no. It comes down to your health, your other income, your marital status and how comfortable you are managing a large sum. We compare both options side by side before you decide.

What happens to my plan if the market drops?

We plan for drops before they happen, usually by keeping near-term income in steadier holdings so you aren't forced to sell low. At your next review, or sooner if needed, we check whether anything should change.

Do you only handle retirement?

No. Retirement often ties into other work we do, like tax management, legacy planning for what you leave your family, and life insurance consulting. We can bring those in when they help your plan.
