Tax Management in Aberdeen

Taxes are a cost you pay every year on what you already own. We look at how your accounts are set up, where your income comes from and when you sell, then keep tuning it year after year so more of your wealth stays put.

Tax management is upkeep, not a one-time fix

Most people think about taxes in April. By then, most of the choices are already made. Which account you sold from, when you took a withdrawal, whether a gain was short-term or long-term. Tax management means looking at those choices before they happen.

We do this as regular maintenance on your portfolio and financial plan. A small change made each year, like placing an investment in a better account or timing a sale, adds up over a long stretch of time. It works on the money you already have instead of asking you to take on more risk.

We work alongside whoever prepares your return. They handle the filing. We help shape the year that ends up on it.

What we handle

  1. 01

    Where each investment is held

Some holdings produce a steady stream of taxable income, while others mostly grow. We check which ones sit in your taxable, tax-deferred and Roth accounts and recommend changes that fit your situation.

  2. 02

A look at gains and losses

We estimate the tax on a sale before you make it. If a holding has dropped, we consider whether using that loss against gains makes sense in your plan.

  3. 03

    The order of retirement withdrawals

Drawing from the wrong account first can bump you into a higher bracket. We lay out which accounts to use and in what sequence, then update it every year as your situation shifts.

  4. 04

    Roth conversion check

Early retirement and other years with lower income can be a chance to shift part of a traditional IRA into a Roth. We look at whether doing so could cut your taxes down the road.

  5. 05

    Required withdrawals and charitable gifts

When required minimum distributions begin, we help you plan around them. If charity matters to you, we look at ways of giving that also improve your tax picture.

  6. 06

    A summary for your preparer

We send a note on what we changed and why, so nothing catches your preparer off guard when the return is filed.

When your taxes deserve a closer look

  • April keeps bringing bad news

Owing more than you planned year after year usually points to something in the setup of your income or investments.

  • Fund payouts at year-end

Mutual funds held in a taxable account can hand you gains you never chose. The tax is due even when you sold nothing.

  • You plan to retire in a few years

The stretch just before and just after your last paycheck is often the best time for tax moves. That chance can pass if you wait.

  • A business or property just sold

One large gain reshapes the whole tax year. It is far easier to plan for it ahead than to clean it up later.

  • Accounts in many different places

A couple of old 401(k)s, a brokerage account, an IRA opened long ago. If no one reviews them side by side, you are likely paying more tax than you need to.

How we work through it

  1. 1

    Introductory meeting

First we sit down together, either here at our office or over phone or video, whichever suits you. Walk us through your accounts and what worries you about the tax side. If we don't think we can help, we will say so up front.

  2. 2

    Gather the paperwork

We ask for recent tax returns and account statements. These show us how your income is taxed today and where the friction is.

  3. 3

    Walk through what we found

We go over each suggestion in plain terms: what it does and what it costs to make. You pick what to act on. Nothing moves until you say yes.

  4. 4

    Make the changes

We carry out the account moves we agreed on and write up notes for your tax preparer.

  5. 5

    Check in every year

Tax rules shift, and so does your life. We review your setup once a year, usually before year-end, so small adjustments land while they still count.

What sets the fee

No two clients hold the same accounts or earn income the same way, so tax management has no set fee. Before we start, the introductory meeting covers how we get paid, what that pays for and the reasons behind it.

The number of accounts
Two accounts take less time to go through than a dozen spread over old employers and different firms.
Your sources of income
Salary on its own is simple. Stock options, pensions, rental income or business income take more planning.
Whether your investments are with us too
Tax work that is part of our ongoing investment management is arranged differently from a stand-alone review.
Major events during the year
A sale, an inheritance or your first year of retirement can add work for that year.

Tax management questions we hear

Will I still need someone to prepare my taxes?

Yes. Your preparer files the return, and we plan during the year so the result is better. We are happy to speak with your preparer so everyone has the same information.

Does this only pay off for people with large accounts?

No. If you have a taxable account, a retirement account or retirement on the horizon, thinking about taxes in advance can help. The steps may be modest, but over many years they add up.

How often should my setup be reviewed?

Once a year at minimum, and again whenever something major happens, such as a new job, a sale or the start of retirement. This is ongoing upkeep. A single review followed by nothing leaves most of the value unused.

Are New Jersey tax rules different from federal ones?

Partly, yes. The state treats retirement income and some accounts differently than the federal rules do. We account for both in your plan, and your preparer checks the specifics on the return.

Do you make changes on your own?

No. Every change comes with an explanation of what it is and why we recommend it, and nothing happens until you approve it.
